Dr. Gerald Imber talks about anti-aging ingestibles ideal for topical treatments.
May 28, 2011
By: Gerald Imber
Founder of Youth Corridor
Skin care ingredients have always focused on cleansing, toning and moisturizing. Recently, several edible ingredients best-known for their health benefits have been given new topical applications which are not only crucial in reversing the signs of aging but also in keeping skin healthy and beautiful. Melatonin and green tea are two potent antioxidants which are important in the anti-aging process. Melatonin is a key ingredient in our Youth Corridor Antioxidant Boost. To most, it is simply jet lag fighting drug. However, melatonin is actually an important, naturally occurring compound found in all cells. Its effect on the body rhythms is due to potent antioxidant activity—among the most potent found in the body. Vitamin C and vitamin E are antioxidants as well, but not as ubiquitous and not nearly as powerful as melatonin. When vitamin C penetrates the skin, it stimulates collagen synthesis and reverses aging. The problem is getting the vitamin C into the skin. It is unstable and penetrates poorly. When vitamin E is added, the combination shows more antioxidant activity, probably because of better penetration and stability in combination. But when tiny amounts of melatonin are added to the mix, the results are dramatically better, and far more pronounced antioxidant activity is obvious. Melatonin is crucial in the life of cells, and though its precise method of action in combination with vitamins C and E is unknown, the result is a big step forward in maintaining healthy, youthful skin and reversing sun damage. Green tea is a great source of the powerful antioxidant group called catechins. It is credited with improving cardiac health, boosting immune response and protecting against cancer. A huge buzzword in the beauty industry today, green tea is recognized for promoting healthy skin. It contains 10 times the antioxidants of fruit and vegetables and acts as an anti-inflammatory. Green tea contains a type of antioxidant known as a polyphenol, which helps break down MMP (matrix metalloproteinase), a substance in the skin that damages healthy collagen. Polyphenols also act as free radical scavengers. Studies indicate that green tea synergistically enhances sun protection when combined with sun block to reduce free radical damage caused by harmful UVA and UVB rays. In addition to drinking green tea, Youth Corridor's Gentle Moisturizer with Green Tea is the perfect way to get adaily dose of antioxidants and suppress inflammation.
